Teaching Philosophy
As a teacher, I believe the fundamental goal of teaching is to foster learning and learning is a journey that never ends. The diversity of my education shapes my teaching philosophy. I have a wide range of education to include Management, Human Resources, and Technology. My best asset as a teacher is my passion for learning and my compassion for my students to work to their maximum ability while learning all they can and fulfilling their needs. A teacher’s job does not stop with book knowledge that is where it begins.
My objectives as a teacher are to ensure each student develops problem-solving strategies, to foster critical thinking skills, to facilitate the acquisition of life-long learning skills, and to prepare students to function effectively in an information economy. Students who acquire these abilities will be better equipped to apply theories learned to real-life applications. To be able to understand the classroom dynamics, whether online or on campus, and to create an atmosphere that fosters learning. Additionally, to tune in to the student’s needs by drawing on the student’s ideas, interest, and concerns.
Students have different types of learning styles and it is important as a teacher to recognize these different learning styles. Ability-based and/or performance-based assessments contribute to this understanding. Collaborative and individual projects often help shy students excel in vocalizing their thoughts and ideas. I utilize standardized evaluation forms in addition to having developed my own evaluation form for students to indicate what areas and how they feel I could best meet their needs. These forms assist me in having improved teacher awareness, better reflection on the contents of the course, and areas for development.
An important word in my teaching vocabulary is the word “Learning”. I use the word “Learning as an acronym to express the aspects of teaching I hold dear. L is for Learning, E is for Expression, A is for Assessment, R is for Responsibility, N is for Negotiation, I is for Individualism, N is for Negativism, and G is for Goal. It is important to listen to the complete conversation prior to expression of one’s own thoughts and forming an assessment of what is being said. It is the responsibility of each individual to master the art of negotiation, while maintaining his/her individualism and avoiding negativism to reach a goal. Learning is a journey that never ends.
It is crucial to have a plan in action for continual professional development and personal growth. My professional development and personal growth plan includes continual education, especially in the area of educational technological advancement. I read numerous books and publications on various teaching styles and methods. I think it is equally important to communicate with peers in addition to having a mentor and being a mentor to students who are interested in entering the teaching profession. Continual progress in professional development and personal growth will ensure I am the best teacher I can be and my students learn as much as they possibly can.
